ChaLean Extreme Review: My Story

I was not always a fitness fanatic, in fact, the extent of my exercise routine consisted of walking to the car and walking around the supermarket. Despite my lack of exercise, I was not fat, but I was definitely soft and a bit jiggly. What really bothered me was my lack of stamina. Some of my fitter friends could jog up a flight of stairs and continue our conversation as if nothing had happened. I would walk up behind them, breathing heavily and only able to communicate in grunts and nods for several minutes. I didn’t really think much of it for a long time, but it eventually started to bother me.

Then one day my good friend suggested I partake in the 5 mile charity run which was scheduled to take place in six months’ time. I scoffed at the idea “me, running, no chance”. Gradually that seed of an idea took root and I thought why not, it’s for a good cause and it might help me get a firmer bum. A few days later I found myself with a gym membership and a plan for working up to compete in a 5 mile race. To my surprise I didn’t hate running, in fact, it was kinda great. I enjoyed the challenge of ever increasing the distance I could go without taking a break and I enjoyed the way it made me feel afterwards. I was now officially a runner and bought all the gear to along with it. Running shoes, running socks, running vest, I was easily impressed with marketing and bought into every ‘essential’ piece of running kit I could. Unfortunately, my own inexperience came back to haunt me.

One day I was at the gym training for the race and I felt a pain in my thigh. Had I known what I know now, I would have stopped at that point and spent some time recovering and resting my leg. I failed to do that though and thought I could run through the pain. It’s perhaps no surprise that the continued running only served to aggravate the injury and it ended up meaning I couldn’t run for four months.  My new found love of exercise was gone before I even realised it, I was incredibly upset and thought that all my months of training would now be wasted. I would never get the firm bum of my dreams. It was at this point that I started looking around for alternatives to running, which resulted in my CHALean Extreme experience.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: How I Got Started?

Feeling a bit sorry for myself, I started looking into alternative exercise routines which would not aggravate my leg injury. I read a lot of online reviews and started to get an idea that a low impact, high-intensity strength routine would probably be an ideal solution to meet my needs. The question remained what strength routine to do and how do I get started? A good friend of mine mentioned that they had been doing the Insanity workout from BeachBody and that there was probably a program available which would meet my very specific needs. As I looked around at the BeachBody programs, ChaLean Extreme seemed like an obvious choice. It’s a workout routine which works to build muscles while also melting away fat… sounds perfect.  had a couple of concerns though. Would a strength workout programme end up with me looking like something out of muscle magazine? I don’t have anything particularly against that kind of look; it’s just not for me. I also wanted to make sure the program would not make my injury any worse. Like any modern day women I took to google for the answers and pretty quickly came to realise that a strength routine would only tone me up, I would need to take certain chemical enhancers to look muscly, so no worries there then. I also decided that I could always adjust the routine to not overwork my leg, allowing time for recovery. So without further ado, I ordered the ChaLEAN Extreme workout DVDs. A few months later I’ve come to the conclusion that this was one of the best moves I’ve ever made with regards to my fitness.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: What Does It Do?

ChaLEAN Extreme is simply a 90-day workout program which has been put together and tailored for a home workout. The program creator and coach on the DVDs is Charlene Johnsons. Charlene is well known for several additional BeachBody workouts, including TurboFire and PiYo. Charlene is an inspiration. You can tell she loves what she does and her enthusiasm is infectious, it’s difficult to watch the DVDs and not feel incredibly motivated to workout. She does a great job of keeping the workouts fun, informative and easy to follow. At no point did I feel overwhelmed or unsure as to what I should be doing. It’s no doubt difficult to do all of this but Charlene makes it look easy, which is a talent which should be commended.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: Why Does It Work?

ChaLEAN Extreme uses a well-known and proven theory that muscle burns fat. Essentially this means that if you have allot of muscle, you’re going to use allot more calories, even when you’re doing nothing. Muscle’s by definition burn fuel all of the time, and it’s estimated that muscles will consume between 3 -5 times more calories for the same weight in fat. So, even then you’re sitting watching TV the extra muscle you’ve accumulated is working to burn away your excess fat. As I’ve already mentioned, you need not worry about becoming a muscle bound he-man, it’s just not in the female genetics to do so. You can definitely expect to become toned and stronger, just not bulky. If you take 1lb of fat and compare it directly to 1lb of muscle, you’ll find that the muscle will take up around 20% less space. So, if you’re working out and replacing fat with muscle, you can expect to look smaller. You’ll start to look lean and toned. As you become more toned, you’ll start to see more definition in your muscles. This definition of your muscles has a sort of visual illusion effect, making your body look longer, taller and leaner. Most Men have no problem putting on extra muscle and increasing in size, this is simply due to the chemicals at work in their body. Men have testosterone which facilitates the ability to build muscle, while women lack this chemical in their bodies at sufficient levels to build muscle. So unless you’re taking additional testosterone supplements you have nothing to worry about.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: The Programme

ChaLEAN Extreme is made up of three distinct phases. The phases are similar in their design in that each has three days of strength training and two days of cardio based workouts. You can also indulge in a spot of Yoga Stretching type of workout as well as a workout primarily focused on your abs.

Phase 1: Burn Phase

The Burn Phrase has been created to kick start your 90 day workout by igniting your metabolism and starting your fat burning journey. The weights in this phase are deliberately kept at a reasonable level, not heavy and not light. The Phase works out both your upper body and your lower body and consists of something they call breakdown sets, coupled with slow reps to finish with. The slow reps are a bit of a killer coming at the end of each set, you WILL feel the burn.

Phase 2: Push Phase

This phases consists of heavy weights and designed to make you work as hard as possible, probably harder than you think you’re capable off. Lift as heavy as you can and the strength gains will come. Each set will either work the upper body or lower body and will continue with the breakdown sets as used in the Burn Phase. This phase can be quite enjoyable, especially since you start to see the improvement in the amount you’re able to lift.

Phase 3: Lean Phase

This phase is focused on stripping away the excess fat so you can see the improvements you’ve made to your body. This time you’ll be working both your upper body and lower body in the same workout, you should also expect to do core work… which I hate (does anyone like planks?). If you’re sticking to the nutrition plan and giving the programme everything you can then you’ll definitely start to see the results shining through. You’ll look fitter and firmer.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: Eating Right

They say that abs are made in the kitchen, which is just another way of saying that if your diet isn’t right, you’re not going to see the results you’re expecting. Eating right will result in muscle gain and fat loss, eating wrong will result in either no change or even fat gain. So it’s important to nail the nutrition side of the programme as well as the workout side. ChaLEAN Extreme makes choosing the right foods and the right portion sizes a walk in the park. Each phase is catered for with its own meal ideas as well as suggestions for snacks for when the urge takes you. The programme facilitates calculating your calorie requirements, which in turn means you can adjust the meal plans accordingly. If all of this sounds complicated, don’t worry about it, it’s all explained carefully and is really very straightforward to understand. The Burn Phase of the nutrition plan you’ll be eating foods high in protein but low in carbs, with as much as veggies as you want to eat. The Push Phase will up the calorie intake slightly to facilitate the muscle gain, so more protein and a bit more carbs. Again lots of veggies to eat if you so wish. The Lean Phase will see another increase in calorie increase and this time the meals will be a mixture of the last two phases. Expect to east allot of protein, some carbs and lots of vegetables. Don’t scrimp on what you’re eating expecting to see results faster. It’s important that you’re taking in the right type of calories to fuel your workouts. The workouts can be intense so it’s important that you have enough energy and muscle building protein to really give your workout your all. If you want to see results, eat right and workout hard, the results will follow.

ChaLEAN Extreme Review: My Thoughts and Results

There’s no doubt in my mind that ChaLEAN Extreme can deliver results, I wish I had taken before and after pictures to prove the point, but there’s absolutely no denying the progress I’ve made. I have successfully toned up the whole of my body, the stubborn ‘not quite’ mutton top has gone, and I’m firmer and less droopy. Not only do I look better, I feel better as well. My strength has undeniably gone up, taking shopping from the car to the house is no longer a problem and I’m sure I can lift more than 99% of my friends. My energy levels are up and I feel emotionally well, I’ve got over the post-injury blues and I feel I can take on any physical challenge given enough training. You might be wondering, what do I do for a workout now?

The answer is I still do ChaLEAN extreme with a bit of modification to meet my own particular fitness goals. The programme is easy to change and mix up as you see fit, so if you want to run, then feel free to add in some running.
