Laminators are machines which can laminate a document i.e. permanently fuse it between two sheets of plastic films. People have been laminating their documents for almost a century now, to improve the appearance, strength, and durability of their important documents.

Why should you laminate your documents?

To improve its appearanceWhen you keep your papers laminated you will look more sorted and will be easy to arrange. It also shows your responsible and careful nature.

To increase strength and firmness: Upon lamination, your documents become stronger, more right and resistant to wears and tears. It even makes it almost water-proof.

To decrease the rate of deterioration: Papers are subject to wasting due to many factors like termites, humidity and atmospheric chemicals, which make the paper yellowish and fragile. Lamination largely decreases the chances of deterioration due to these factors.

Most commonly used types laminators:

Roll laminators These types of laminators use large rolls of laminating films with adhesives on them. The documents or papers of various sizes could be kept between the two sheets of the rolls, which are fused when the sheet is subjected to heat. Though these types of laminators can laminate multiple documents at a time in a series, they are bulky and expensive. Hence, they are good for industrial purposes only.

Pouch laminators These laminators use specially sized film pouches, which can be used to laminate papers of the corresponding size only. The paper is sandwiched between the two films and is not between a carrier (generally a hard paper file) and the whole set is allowed to pass through rolling hot cylinders to finish the lamination. This type of laminators is more compact and easy to handle. They are the most commonly used laminators for domestic and official purposes.

Cold laminators– Cold laminators are quite different from the previously discussed laminators in that they use pressure and adhesive rather than heat to laminate your documents. They are safer due to lack of any heating element. They are easier to handle and maintain. This is the only type of lamination that is known to be water-proof. They also give the document more freshness and durability.

General prices of laminators

Thermal laminators or pouch laminators may cost you from £ 20 to £ 200, the average being somewhere about £ 25. Cold laminators for domestic purposes also cost similar to thermal laminators. Industrial cold laminators may, however, cost you £1000 or more.

How to choose a laminator?

  • Type of lamination– You must consider the type of lamination that you will be using the laminator for. A domestic laminator, for example, won’t be suitable for large sheets. However, if making id-cards or laminating A4 size papers is all you’ll be laminating, then a domestic lamination machine should suffice.
  • Safety– If you have small children and pets in your home, then you’ll like to buy a lamination machine which has a cold lamination option as well. Even if it does hot lamination, then also its heating element should be far away from reach.
  • Additional features– Some laminators have features like auto-shut and safety alarm for preventing hazards due to overheating and saving electricity at the same time. Some of them also have advanced programmable features to increase their usability.
