Study says that there is a lower risk of covid in air travel than grocery shopping and eating outside: Mumbai: According to a study published by Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Air travel has lower covid risk than say eating out or grocery shopping. However, there are caveats to this. Passengers should be wearing face masks, Aircraft filtration systems and air conditioning should function well, cabin surfaces should be disinfected and ventilation should be maintained from gate to gate.
According to the recent report, various non-pharmaceutical interventions play a key role to control the transmission of covid onboard aircraft. Following are some of the strategies :
- operation of ventilation systems
- disinfection of surfaces
- wearing face masks
- social distancing among passengers and crew members
All the above listed non-pharmaceutical interventions prove to be very effective. The study proposed using the layered risk of mitigation strategies and not just the effectiveness of any kind of strategy.
Study says that there is a lower risk of covid in air travel than grocery shopping and eating outside:
So the study said that a mask-wearing passenger in the nearest seat to a masked infectious person will have a reduced risk of exposure. The study found, “The estimated dose inhaled by an adjacent passenger over a few hours of exposure is likely to be less than the amount necessary to cause a secondary infection.”
Aircraft ventilation is considered to provide better protection against airborne contagions when compared to conventional mechanical ventilation. The study reports that this level of ventilation in aircraft will reduce the opportunity for a person to person transmission of infectious particles when compliant with mask-wearing policies consistently. This reduces the transmission of covid.
